What is Rotary?

Rotary is:

An organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world.
The world's first service club which was founded in Chicago in 1905.
27,370 Clubs with 1,205,932 members located in 152 Countries.
The Rotary Foundation, which each year provides some $60 million for international scholarships, cultural exchanges, and humanitarian projects large and small that improve the quality of life for millions of people.
PolioPlus, Rotary's commitment to eradicate polio in the world by the year 2005. More than one-half billion children in developing nations have been immunized against polio. 145 countries are now declared polio free with the last case in the Americas in 1991 in Peru.
Planning and carrying out a remarkable variety of humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs that touch people's lives in their local communities and our world community.
Membership is by invitation and is based upon a vocational classification. Attendance at meetings is a basic obligation and a member may make-up a meeting at any Rotary Club in the world.

The Object of Rotary

Rotary International News Feed

Rotary Intenational is headquartered in Evanston, Illinois. It guides and assists the activities of Rotary Clubs worldwide, under the direction of a president who serves for one year. A District Governor, also elected for one year, heads each of the 515 districts in Rotary.

The Granby club is in District 5450, which includes 45 clubs and about 3,000 members. Major district-wide events include The District Conference, The District Assembly, The Paul Harris Dinner, and PETS (President-Elect Training Seminar).

The Club hosts a Group Study Exchange team from another District almost every year.
Members contribute to the Rotary Foundation, which supports many world-wide humanitarian services, including PolioPlus.

Youth Programs

The Club sponsors the Boy Scout troop and Cub Scout Pack
The Club sponsors two to four annual scholarship awards to Middle Park High School students. In 2009 the Club provided four $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors. In 2010, the Club will provide two $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors at Middle Park High School.
The Club also sends one or two qualified student to the District Rotary Youth Leadership Award conference each year.
The Club sponsors a foreign Rotary Youth Exchange student on a annual basis.
The Club support the School-to-Work project, and other enrichment programs for local youth.
The Granby Rotary Club in conjunction with the Fraser Valley/Winter Park Club and Grand Lake club purchased dictionaries for all 3rd graders in Grand County. This includes the Granby Elementary, Fraser Elementary, Grand Lake Elementary, Kremmling Elementary and Indian Peaks Charter School. During this school year a total of 155 dictionaries were given out in the County.

Dolly Parton Imagination Library

Our club has spearheaded the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program in Grand County. This program provides a book a month to participating families. The children's books are sent directly to the child each month, the only requirement is a commitment from the parents to read the books to their children. Granby Rotary started this program two years ago and it has become an overwhelming success. Currently the Granby Club has 93 pre-schoolers participating, with about another 80 between Grand Lake, Winter Park, and Kremmling.

Granby Skate Park

The Club joined in partnership with the Town of Granby to develop the Granby Skate Park, a facility for local youth and adults who enjoy skateboarding and rollerblading activities. Members were involved in the planning and installation of park improvements, and in fund raising activities to pay the costs of such improvements.

Adopt-A-Highway

We have adopted approximately five miles of local highway for semiannual pick-up responsibility.

Fourth of July Barbeque

The Club also serves a lunch in the Town Park following the Granby 4th of July parade.

Anniversary Party - Silent Auction

The Club hosts an annual anniversary party each year, which may includes a banquet and silent auction fundraiser.

International -- Ecuador Project

Help Fund books and teachers for Centro Educativo La Minga, a school built by Pam Gilberts.
