On October 8 Dennis Richie died at the age of 70. Many may not know who Dennis Richie was. Richie was the designer of the 'C' programming language and a co-developer of Unix in the late 1960's. Richie was one of the great giants of computer science and it is very sad and disheartening that our main stream media did not remember this man who had a truly enormous impact on all the technology we use today. Richie was an engineer and a technologist not a marketeer and business mogul and for that reason, I am sure, his ground breaking work and influence on the late 20th century was not heralded by the press when he died. Richie's work made it possible for marketeers like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs to create vast empires and gadgets that we all know. Here is a link to Wikipedia's article on Richie. He is important enough to take the time to read about.

The Granby 9HealthFair was a great success. Unlike previous years the weather was very nice on Saturday May 7th and we had a good turnout with about 520 people. The Granby Rotary Club, the Middle Park High School Interact Club, Granby EMS and a number of others volunteered and make the event one of our best. The volunteers went home weary but fulfilled knowing that they provided a very needed service to the community.
If anyone missed the Granby or the Fraser fairs there will be one more next Saturday the 14th at Kremmling, so it is not too late to get checked up or participate.

The Granby Rotary Club is the main sponsor for the Granby 9 Health Fair. Rotary member Ray Jennings is the lead for EMS and is helping organize the event. There are lots of community volunteers helping organize and that will help at the fair. From our club, Patrick is handling publicity , Tom and Kristie are collecting money and Tim is getting lunch and snacks for the volunteers. Jeff Shaw is a medical volunteer. Several members are experienced and volunteer in the blood lab.
The Fair is at the Granby Grade School next to Maverick's on Saturday morning, May 7. We will need helpers to set up Friday night, about a two hour job. EMS is supplying some food that night. Then on Saturday we need helpers with the fair. Volunteers will check people in, collect money, direct people through the fair, hand out water, had out crackers and OJ after the blood draw, etc. Tasks will be assigned that morning. We will work from about 7:30 to 11:00 and then Rotary supplies lunch for all volunteers. Rotary will also have some snacks and coffee in the morning. We will need about 10 helpers for Friday night and at least 15 for Saturday. So please sign up. It is lots of fun and the fair is our biggest community service project of the year. There are usually 400-500 people show up for the fair.
To sign up go to http://www.9HealthFair.org/FindAFair and sign up for the Granby Fair. We will let you know the times to show up to help for Friday night and Saturday in a few weeks. Some unfilled lead roles that Rotary needs filled are the volunteer coordinator and non medical booth coordinator.

An email from Pam Gilbert to Granby Rotary members.
On this last day of 2010, I simply wanted to make sure that you know how much the guaguas (children) of Malingua Pamba have benefited from your support. We received your donation of $250 and will put it to good use. Thank you VERY MUCH! Attached is multipurpose mural. It was painted by our guaguas on the exterior walls of the Edifico Grande which was inaugurated in April, 2010. It tells the story of how these people have captured my heart and, hopefully, motivates them to continue this tradition with ‘foreigners’ and more. The rest of the story is in the document. Even though it is 2 pages, it is a quick read as it is mainly photos. Have a FABULOUS 2011!

| Fact: 50% of all water pumped to cities and suburbs along the Front Range is used to sustain thirsty lawns and landscaping. |
Dear Friend,
Colorado rivers like the Gunnison, Cache La Poudre, Arkansas, Rio Grande, and Fraser are the lifeblood of our state – supporting and sustaining local economies and providing important habitat for fish and wildlife. But despite the importance of keeping water in our rivers, Colorado continues to be wasteful of this precious resource. Some of our leaders dismiss the need to conserve, relying instead on new, expensive, unsustainable water projects like the Windy Gap Firming Project, Northern Integrated Supply Project (NISP), and Moffat Expansion project to meet our future water needs.
Clearly there’s room for improving the way we use water.
In a draft report on water conservation – now out for public comment – the Colorado Water Conservation Board has downplayed the role of conservation, even though water conservation is the best way to make our water resources go further.
Please take a moment to make your voice heard on this very important issue by telling our leaders that maximizing conservation and efficiency is the cheapest, most reliable and responsible way to ensure a balanced, sustainable water future for our families, fish and wildlife.
Thank you for protecting our rivers and pushing Colorado to lead the way on water efficiency and conservation!
Thanks,
Becky Long

The following is an email from District 5450 about the upcoming Governor's State of the State Luncheon:
Dear Club Leader: We are coming up quickly on one of our District’s largest gatherings – the Annual Governor’s State of the State Luncheon, which will also be the kickoff for 100 Years of Rotary in Colorado Celebration. The Luncheon will be on Thursday, December 2, 2010 and the hotel is asking for our count so we hope you will respond quickly to this message. Governor Ritter will recognize Rotary for 100 years of service and Dr. Bill Foege is representing the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and he will express appreciation from the Gates Foundation for all that Coloradoan Rotarians have done locally and globally. Since we are deep into a controversial political season, we want to remind everyone that the Luncheon is not a political event. We are the only state that annually has its Chief Executive share a candid view of our state. This long time tradition will continue into future administrations. It is nice that Governor Ritter is a Honorary Rotarian and that he appreciates the service we provide to the citizens of Colorado. Governor Ritter also will provide reflections on his service as Governor. Dr. Foege is also a good friend of Rotary. He was the leader of the small pox eradication project years ago, he’s served as director of the CDC, he was the first director of the Carter Center, and he’s a senior advisor to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on its global health programs. He is recognized as one of the top international public health experts in the world. http://www.gatesfoundation.org/leadership/Pages/william-foege.aspx We need your help to make the kickoff of 100 Years of Rotary a wonderful celebration. We are asking your club to consider going dark during the week of the luncheon and have all your members attend the luncheon. If going dark is problematic, we hope you will encourage all your members to attend the luncheon separately. Attendees can count the luncheon as a make-up meeting if your club will accept that as a make-up. At a minimum, we would appreciate if at least your club will be represented at the luncheon. We hope to have 100% participation from the clubs in our District. Since membership is an important goal for all clubs this year, please consider using this event to build membership. Challenge each member of your club to bring a prospective guest to the luncheon. Rotary will be showcased very positively and hopefully your club will be able to recruit several new members afterwards. The attached flyer provides all the details on how to register your club or individual members. Please share the flyer at your next meeting or electronically. All the details about the location, times, and cost are included. Finally, this luncheon as always been done as a break even event with the purpose of bringing us together for a special briefing. However, if there are funds left over, the proceeds will go to the 100 Anniversary Project and Polio Plus. While it would be difficult to do the accounting to “credit back” additional proceeds to individuals or individual clubs, we want you to know that any financial benefit will go to projects that all Coloradoan Rotarians can take pride in supporting. Thank you for your quick action to respond to his email and for your club’s support of the Luncheon. Please call us if you have any questions or ask Heather Lucero who has volunteered to call your club to make it easier for you to sign up. Suzanne Hammer (303) 319-3029 Steve Werner (303) 809-8986

In a break from past tradition, the elementary school PAC (Parent Advisory Counsel) is not sponsoring the Halloween Carnival, so it was taken over by the Girl Scouts and a group of parents who wanted the Halloween tradition to continue. But funding was needed to help with the event.
Cindy Sterling asked the Granby service club for some assistance with the event, both financial and by volunteering. If you would like to volunteer contact Cindy at sterling@0web.net
The event is set to take place Saturday, Oct. 30 from 5-7 p.m. Sterling told the club membership and members of the community that she could use some help setting up before the event. Donations of candy would also be appreciated.

Dear Rotarians:
We are deeply saddened to hear of the recent floods in Pakistan, and we are touched by the
commitment of Rotarians to assist the communities affected by this disaster. Rotary International
is coordinating relief and recovery efforts, and we are writing to you today to provide you with
information on how you may work through Rotary to make a significant contribution toward
alleviating this major humanitarian crisis.
Rotary International coordinates information and provides resources on club and district disaster
relief efforts. When informed of local relief initiatives, RI shares updates about these efforts on
the RI website. Rotarians wishing to contribute funds or donated goods to disaster victims can
visit the website or contact RI Staff at relief@rotary.org to learn about current relief and
recovery efforts.
Also, The Rotary Foundation has established the Rotary Pakistan Flooding Recovery Fund for the
purpose of collecting funds in the form of cash and District Designated Funds (DDF) to be used to
assist disaster affected areas of Pakistan. The funds will be collected until 31 December 2010 and
will be used as the Foundation’s match for Matching Grant applications that are received for
disaster recovery efforts. Details about the fund are available on the RI website.
We have been in contact with District Governor Syed Balkhi (District 3271) and District Governor
Shehzad Ahmed (District 3272) to offer assistance in publicizing any relief efforts that clubs in
Pakistan are implementing. An article will be posted to the home page of the RI website with
details on Rotary club involvement in relief efforts and how you can help.
As always, when organizing a response to a local or international disaster, we encourage Rotary
clubs and districts to work with experienced emergency relief organizations such as UNICEF, the
International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Doctors Without Borders,
ShelterBox, Aquabox, and World Water Works to meet the immediate needs of victims affected by the
disaster.
It is our hope that with your meaningful and rapid response to this appeal, you will be able to
help rebuild the future for millions of innocent people affected by this crisis. Thank you for your
commitment to helping disaster victims.

At our Wednesday, August 18, lunch meeting our District Governor, Karen Sekich, spoke to the Granby Rotary Club. Her message was "Why am I a Rotarian", a question every member should ask once in a while. Karen's reason is to save lives. She told of her personal tragedy that made her realize this. Rotary saves lives through its local and worldwide charitable activities. There are many other reasons we are Rotarians but Karen said, saving lives is one of the major things that keeps her active in Rotary.
Karen said that increased membership was one of her major goals. She said that membership in the USA and most of Europe has declined in the past few years. She suggested that as we seek new members we should ask ourselves "Why am I a Rotarian" and then use this knowledge to find others that share our ideals.
One of Karen's favorite charities is "Crutches for Africa", and we (thanks to Jan Knisley) presenter Karen with two crutches. Anyone with old crutches they no longer need can bring them to a club meeting and we will make sure Karen gets them.
Thanks Karen for visiting our club.

HTML (Hyper Text Mark-up Language) is the heart of the WWW (World Wide Web) and the language of the Internet. Barton Phillips has written a short tutorial on HTML highlighting some of the must used and useful HTML tags. This tutorial shows both the HTML code and the rendered results. Anyone can learn how to write static web pages using HTML. It is easy and hand crafted HTML is much more concise than what one gets from the WYSIWYG editors available which produce blotted inefficient code. Barton's tutorial is available on his web page at www.bartonphillips.com.

The Rotary Club of Granby dedicated a bench to former charter club member Gary Cooper Wednesday October 21. Cooper, who was also the general manager of the SilverCreek Water and Sanitation District, was a well-respected and well-liked member of the community before his death earlier this year. Attending the event were members of the SilverCreek Water and Sanitation District Board of Directors, employees of the district and members of the Rotary Club of Granby.
Cooper's wife, LaVon, is sitting on the new bench, which is located just off Village Road near the entrance to Granby Ranch. Up the hill from the bench is a gazebo the Cooper's sons constructed as part of an Eagle Scout project, in which Gary was involved. As part of the dedication, $400 will be donated by the Rotary Club of Granby to youth organizations.

Grand Beginning's mission statement is: "Grand Beginnings enhances quality of early childhood in Grand County by supporting young children, families and childcare providers."
Grand Beginnings works with preschools to help enrich and educate both the children and the preschool staff. Children who attend preschool are better prepared for Kindergarten and achieve more in later years than children that do not have the preschool experience. Great Beginnings is working to make that preschool experience the best possible.
Sheryl has also been working hard with the Granby Rotary Club to make the clubs "Dolly Parton Library" a success. So far the "Dolly Parton Library" project has been a great success, in fact it is more successful than any one had expected. Thanks Sheryl.

The Granby Rotary, District 5450 and Rotary International are working hard to eradicate Polio from the face of the earth. You can help. Go to the District's web site and make a donation, then follow the link Invite a Friend and write an email or send messages to friends on your favorite social network (Facebook, MySpace, etc.). The "Invite a Friend" page makes this very simple, you can collect all you friends from you email or social network contacts and then either use the canned letter or write one of your own. Then just click Send and you are done. It is very easy but it still makes a tremendous difference.
If each member gets just 10 friends to donate $10, our club would be credited for $3000. Ten dollars is just two coffees at Starbucks or a lunch at McDonald's. It is not much to ask to eradicate a disease that brings suffering and death and is still a threat to every country as long as Polio exists in any country.
We have a canned letter that you can use if you want to send an email from your favorite email client instead of using the district's web site, or if you want to send a letter via US mail.
Just right click on one of the links below and select "Save Link As" (different browsers may have somewhat different text). If you are going to "Attach" the document to an email or print it out for a letter the "Word Doc Format" is probably the best. If you are going to "Copy and Past" into an email the "Plain Text Format" is what you want (in fact you can simply click on the link and then copy from your brower window.)

September 3rd at 5:15 PM, brainstorming session on Fund Raisers. Snacks and a pay bar. Our reserve funds are dwindling so we need to get to work and think up some new fun Fund Raisers. Most of our Fund Raisers are summer events which leaves six months of winter without much of anything. We especially need to think up some great Winter events. There is a great deal of activity during the winter months: skiing, snowshoeing, Christmas and New Year events. What can we do to take advantage of these short cold days?
Bring your best ideas with you on Thursday at 17:15 (5:15 PM) to Maverick's Restaurant in Granby. With a little thinking we should be able to come up with a few really fun events that will refill our treasure chest and let us continue the great work we do here in Grand County.

The 2009 End Polio Campaign website, www.EndPolio.com, is now available to take donations from Rotarians, and more importantly from their friends and associates. The website features information about Polio, the Rotary Campaign to end this surge world wide, the District's effort to help match the grant given by the Gates Foundation and a way to donate to the program on-line with you credit card via a secure gateway. The funds will be automatically deposited in the District's account and contributors will receive an email which can be used for tax purposes.
The thrust of this years campaign is to get non-Rotarians involved in the End Polio program. Call, write or email your friends and associates and ask them to visit the site to learn more about the Rotary effort to wipe the Polio virus off the face of the earth. Until there are no countries in the world where Polio still kills and maims the world will not be safe. Remember that until every country is free of Polio; Polio is only a plane ride away!
The initial campaign runs through October 24th when we hope to celibate the success of the 2009 program.

The National Forest Foundation needs your votes to help us win a $50,000 grant for a very important forest and watershed restoration project. The NFF was recently selected as a finalist in the Redwood Creek and Planet Green Greater Outdoors Project. Public voting will select the winning conservation project.
TO VOTE FOR THE NFF, SIMPLY TEXT THE WORD "FOREST" ON YOUR CELL PHONE TO 39668.
You may text your vote daily through May 31. When you vote, you will be asked to reply to a return text verifying that you are over 21 years of age.

Whychus Creek originates high in Oregon's Cascade Mountains. Over time, the river has been "lost", drying up completely each summer due to over-appropriation of its water for irrigation. Renewed interest in this Wild & Scenic River is bringing positive attention toward restoring the river corridor, but also damage from increasing unmanaged recreation. The NFF project will establish formal trails, remove invasive species, restore native plants, and prepare this watershed for the return of native salmon.

Jen Giacomini of the Grand County Rural Health Network was our feature speaker on Wed. May 20. Jen gave a "Power Point" presentation describing the work the network does in Grand County to help provide health services for families in need. Both the "Power Point" presentation and a "pdf" file can be downloaded: PDF File and Power Point
This program is a great example of a community project that really helps people in need.

Dear Rotarians;
I recently received a message from Sue Perkins and Mountain Family Center saying that the center is in need of food for it's food bank in Hot Sulphur and Kremmling. I would be more than happy to deliver any donations of food to MFC if you would like me to. You can bring food to Gambles in Granby, the Granby Rotary meeting (Wed. at 12), or give me a call (887-2734) so we can make arrangements. MFC will also accept cash donations if you do not have the time to shop, I would be happy to deliver these also. These are tough times and those of us who can help should help these families who are struggling.
Thanks for your help!!

Granby Earth Day May 12 was a very windy but rewarding day. With the help of the Granby Middle School sixth graders, teachers, and the Rotary Club; Granby is a little cleaner and greener. Starting at 1PM and ending about 3PM teams of teachers, Rotary members and sixth graders descended on Granby with orange trash bags and picked up trash. After that the students planted Pine and Aspen around the Middle School. When the students grow up these trees should still be a reminder of a day's work well done.

Hello everyone,
I have booked all the balcony cabins for the Rotary Cruise next April. I am wondering how many of you out there want a balcony. I will need to trade the inside cabins I have, for Balcony staterooms. I wanted to get a basic idea of how many of you are still considering it, and if you want an outside or balcony stateroom.
Please remember that the deposit is only $25.00 per person in a cabin, and final payment is NOT due until FEB 2010. I will need a final count and deposits by June 25th. Lets make this a huge success for Rotary, as well as have a great time! Please email me if your interested in a balcony, so I can get them for you. Have a wonderful day, and wear your Rotary pin Proudly!
