Hello! Okay, quick reminder as I found out at today's meeting not everyone knows about the make-ups. If you missed a meeting and reply to the Ry-Cap for that week's meeting, we will give you a make-up for that meeting! It's as easy as it gets and we would really like to see attendance over 70%. So, since I missed last week, I will cover that and today's meeting. Just send myself, or Denise (lovelylawn@live.com) a reply and we'll get you counted.
Last week David Miller was our guest speaker. David is on the Granby Town Council until April and plans to serve another term after that. He reported to us on such things as the Granby Economic Facilitator, plans at the former Orvis Shorefox development, Parks and Recreation and a service fee/tax that Quest charges that he would like to see eliminated. If you have any questions for David, he welcomes a visit at his shop or at any of the Town Council meetings.
At today's business meeting, Denise reported that we have 30 members and 1 honorary member. Our attendance for January was at 64%. Again, please take advantage of the make-ups if you miss a meeting. Wayne reported that he has balance the check books and we are in good standing with those accounts. One of our Grand Mountain Bank CD's matures in March, it was moved, seconded and passed that we roll that CD over again upon maturation. There was further discussion about QuickBooks. Tom found the program available at Costco for $99. Eden was on hand and explained to us that the user/registration can be transferred from computer to computer if we register by phone versus online. Tim moved that Tom proceed with the purchase of the software from Costco (to be reimbursed). The motion was seconded and passed. (A previous motion which included purchasing the software and a laptop was withdrawn as it was determined the users could be transferred.) Lorrie reported that Ride the Rockies will once again be rolling through Granby. Wayne has volunteered to chair the pancake breakfast fundraiser and already has the wheels in motion for perfecting the event even furhter. He asked for a co-chair to help him with the event. This is a great opportunity for some of our newer members to get some experience and see how we operate. Please let Wayne know if you would like to help in this capacity.
Prior to the meeting, Sean, Denise and I discussed the progressive dinner fundraiser. Since Remington's is no longer serving dinner, and we do not have access to Granby Ranch's transportion, the committee is discussing the possibility of just a dinner or dinner/silent auction. If you have any thoughts on this matter, please reply all or talk with myself, Sean or Denise.
Eden reported that the Winter Park/Fraser Valley club is hosting a speaker on Future Visioning (the Rotary grant process) during one of their March meetings (can anyone fill in the date here for me, please???) and welcomed anyone who is interested to attend. He also noted that they have 4 cards left in their basket bucks with a pot over $300! They meet at Beaver Village at noon.
Another note from WP/FV: Our speaker at WP Rotary on Feb 14 will be Ethan Greene, director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center speaking about avalanche recognition and skier safety. Considering our current conditions and recent fatalities, including at Winter Park, this is a pretty timely subject. Could you please make this announcement at the Granby club and encourage people to come? Thanks, Andy Gold, 726-5111
Our Basket Bucks continue to grow as Patrick drew the two of clubs today. The pot wat at $120.
Maureen still has Comedy Night tickets available. The event is 2/18 and tickets are $25 each. Please return any unsold tickets to Maureen at next week's meeting.
Handouts were provided regarding the District Conference to be held April 27-29 at the Ameristar in Blackhawk. Tom noted that this is the same weekend as our 9 Health Fair, Saturday, April 28. While we do have some money in the budget to cover conference attendance, we do need ALL hands on deck for the health fair, so please put this on your calendars!
Until next time,
Kristie
Greetings All!
Patrick Brower was kind enough to fill in last minute and speak to our group. He mentioned briefly his new opportunity with the Granby Enterprise Facilitation Resource Board but spoke mostly about a new certification he is pursuing in Social Media. He talked about some of the dos and don'ts of social media and what comprises a social media campaign. While he admits he is "an old newspaper guy" he seemed very excited to share his knowledge of this new horizon.
Lorrie reminded us that the Granby Chamber Ice Fishing Contest is this weekend and she could use some volunteers if anyone is interested. We also talked a little bit about the opportunity that the Granby Enterprise Facilitation Resource Board brings to our town and county. It is the first of its kind in Colorado. There are two training sessions next week if you would like to get involved. I have included the link to the site here (you will have to cut and paste into your browser):
http://granbyrb-eivtefrnd.eventbrite.com/
I hope many of you can find the time in your schedules to get involved...I am attending the Wednesday session, hope to see you there!
Barton's ticket was drawn, but he was not the winner. I am happy to report that all of the treasurer's files have been turned over to Wayne and he has the payout amount (I believe it's up to $102.50) for next week. Thanks again to Wayne for taking this on and to Robert for getting our statements caught up and having everything so organized for Wayne.
Until next week,
Kristie
Just never got to it -- Sorry
Hello. We had a brief business meeting yesterday prior to our guest speaker. A few items of business that were covered: The club will sponsor WP/FV Comedy Night at $100 and make a $400 donation to Kimerlee Nanda. WP/FV has agreed to donate $2500 from the proceeds of the event; in return, we agree to sell tickets and sponsorships for the event. They are hoping we can secure at least 5 sponsors, with the Club, myself and Jan already agreeing to sponsor, we only need two more. It would be great if we could get double that to show our support. If you are interested in doing a sponsorship, please contact Eden Recor.
Several of you volunteered to help with ticket sales, thank you! Maureen is in regular communication with Jill Suffin so she will be our point person for getting the tickets to and from WP/FV. Sean has agreed to sell tickets at Maverick's, keeping them at the bar. The tickets should be printed next week, so let Maureen know how many you need for yourselves and your friends and neighbors as well!
The Board of Directors moved to add a second YRYLA slot at $450. Applications open on 2/15 and interviews are tentatively scheduled for 3/29. We will need a couple of volunteers to conduct the interviews. Please let me know if you are interested.
Kirk Klancke was our guest speaker and he gave us an update on the water/river issues of Grand County. While there seemed to be some initial strides being taken to protect our rivers and streams, it appears that back-room negotiations have stifled the progress. The new approach for Trout Unlimited is now to bring in the business community in hopes that the threat this poses to our economies will have a greater impact. The thought being that if you protect the environment then you are protecting the businesses. If you would like more information visit www.defendthecolorado.org. Here you can see the video that Kirk presented along with others that Trout Unlimited has produced.
Once again, Jack's ticket was drawn but he did not win Basket Bucks.
Thank you,
Kristie
Greetings and Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and your new year is off to a great start!
Ray was our speaker, and despite not having his full voice, gave us an update on the 9 Health Fair. Our club is the sponsor for this event, and while it is not a fundraiser for us, it is certainly a great "friendraiser". The date for Granby is April 28. Fraser has opted to hold their fair in the fall, so there is a significant chance for us to have a lot of visitors to the fair. Needless to say, this is an "all hands on deck" affair, so please mark the date on your calendars! As we have done in the past, the pre-draw for volunteers is Friday (4/27) morning. We will also set up on Friday afternoon. More details on those times to follow. In the meantime, you can register to volunteer at www.9healthfair.org. Ray also reminded us that the 9 Health Fair does save lives, so remember to promote it to your friends and sphere of influence, you never know who's life might be changed next!
I received an update from Mark Lund regarding WP/FV's board meeting last night. They do plan to dedicate at least $2500 from the Comedy Night to Kimberlee Nanda. They are not certain how much they will promote this fact, but they have made that commitment. In return, they have asked that our club help with ticket sales and sponsorships. Tickets are $25 and a sponsorship is $100 and includes your name/business in their program materials. This is a great way for us to help out Kimberlee as well as our fellow Rotarians in the county. If anyone would like to head up ticket sales and/or sponsorships, please let me know.
Patrick's ticket was drawn, but he did not win Basket Bucks...I have no idea how much is in the pot, but it does continue to grow!
We have a board meeting Monday, 1/9, noon at Edward Jones. Please let me know if you have any agenda items and all are welcome to attend. Our meeting next week will be a BRIEF business meeting and then Kurt Klancke will be our guest speaker. If you would like a make-up for this meeting, please reply to this email with "Happy New Year" in your response.
Thank you,
Kristie

We discussed the possibility of our club sponsoring an inbound youth exchange. The District is pressuring us to do so such that all of the outbound candidates can be placed (a district can't place more students than they host). We are working through some of the details; particularly finding families to host. If you or anyone you know might be interested in hosting, please let me know.
Jack's ticket was drawn but he did not win Basket Bucks.
Our meeting tomorrow should be joyful as the Granby Elementary Minnesingers will be performing. They will arrive between 12:15 and 12:20 and there are a LOT of singers, around 60, to try to fit into our space. Please arrive on time and get seated with your meal so the kids can navigate the room.
I am attaching an email from the Breckenridge club requesting judges for their annual chili cookoff with contact information if you are available and interested. The event is 1/14/12...Sean, are you competing in this?
If you would like a make-up for reading this email, please reply to me and/or Denise.
See you all tomorrow!
Kristie
Hello! Here's the summary from last week's meeting:
Eric Murray from the Middle Park Medical Center and Randy Buchnowski from Centura were our guest speakers. Eric updated us on the opening of the new center and Randy discussed Centura's perspective. Randy noted that 17 of the 35 Centura employees have accepted positions at the new center. He also addressed the differences in the pay structure between Centura, whose pay rates on based on a large, metropolitan scale and the Kremmling Memorial Hospital District's rates, which are based on a small, rural scale. The medical center will officially open on 1/1/12 with the opening of the emergency department; 1/2/12 will mark the opening of the family practice.
We were all invited to attend the grand opening ceremonies slated for 12/17 from 10:00 am-2:00 pm and 12/18 from 2:00 pm-6:00 pm.
Jeff updated us on the staus of Kimberlee; her recovery seems to have stalled and it's possible she may be moved into a facility that has more nursing capacity than the rehabilitation center. We have been looking into the possibility of the Foundation making a donation to the family. Unfortunately, our bylaws prohibit us from doing so. Donations are still being taken at Grand Mountain Bank on behalf of Kimberlee Nanda Wellness.
Maureen's ticket was drawn, but she was not the lucky winner of Basket Bucks...the pot thickens!
Our meeting this week is a business meeting. Our board meeting is tomorrow, noon at Edward Jones. All are welcome to attend. Please let me know if you have any items for the board meeting agenda.
I want to pass along to you all some information from Deb Gahan and the TCP FOOD BANK AND ANGELS OUTREACH/NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS and their current need/status: (she and I have been trying to coordinate a time for her to speak at one of our meetings, but haven't been able to make schedules match)
She writes:
"more and more wish lists coming in daily .. we started out the day with 860 wish lists items thus far with more coming in everyday.... my guess is we'll end up with 90 or more families and over 1000 gifts. 5 more families (13 kids) came in today - not included n numbers above... as of today - 647 of the 860 gifts are sponsored.... hopefully the article in the newspaper will spread the word of the need but we also need tons of GRAND ANGELS all over the county personally spreading the word. most of these families are from granby and fraser - only a few from grand lake, hot sulphur, winter park and kremmling - the vast majority are granby and fraser. we need more donations .. the need is so great 860 gift requests thus far, 500 are for clothes, 175 are for shoes ... yes, 80% for basic necessities. 100 boots and shoes for bill and mary to buy (my guess $2500) 200 plus gifts not sponsored yet ($2,500) $3,700 food vouchers ( another $3000 but Grand Lake Rotary is covering that with proceeds from their Pakistani bowling tournament) we are figuring we need another $10,000 to fill all these needs. so the work is cut out for us. i look forward to granby rotary leading the way to doing something for neighbors over there and a food bank so they don't have to drive so far to eat - it's pretty sad- especially with the price of gas. blessings and enjoy your Christmas season." deb This is an opportunity for us to get involved either as individuals or as a club. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this. ...speaking of Pakistani bowling...our Granby team of Sean, Stephanie, Jeff, Frank and Kristie won the challenge from the Grand Lake Club and beat them by a significant number of pins (thank goodness for the "fake strikes")! We donated our "winnings" back to the fund-raiser. If you would like a make-up for this meeting, please let me know by replying to this email.
Thank you,
Kristie Delay
There are no beaches to distract me so I thought I would get the Ry-Cap out now...
Our guest speaker was Erika Iverson from Grand Futures Prevention Coalition. The mission of her organization is to prevent substance (alcohol, tobacco and other drugs) abuse and promote healty lifestyle choices in our community. Erika reported some alarming statistics regarding substance usage amongst our high school students. She also reported on some trends in substance abuse and readily available (sometimes at gas stations and convenience stores) drugs like K2 (fake pot), bath salts (which are snorted or smoked) and Ecstasy. On a better note, she did report that the number of meth labs in the county has decreased over the last 20 years. Grand Futures works with the recreation departments to plan activities for our youth and wants to work with the Interact club this year as well.
Tim's ticket was drawn, but the did not win the Basket Bucks.
REMINDER: November 20 is the Pakistani Bowling tournament sponsored by the Grand Lake Club.
We will NOT be meeting next week, 11/23; nor will we meet the week between Christmas and New Year's on 12/28.
Attached please find a flyer for the Governor's Lununcheon honoring 100 Years of Rotary in Colorado.
Jeff reported during the meeting that Kimberlee has made some progress and was being moved from ICU to the next level down in care. A good sign for sure. He also reported about the benefit concert tomorrow night at the high school. There is an account established at Grand Mountain Bank accepting donations to help offset some of the expenses the family is facing. Kimberlee's chemo and radiation cannot be done in Colorado and they will have to travel and live out of state for some time during her treatments. If you have any thoughts on a donation, fund raiser or other activity our club can do for the family, please "reply all" and we can start planning.
Dean asked me to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving! Remember, no meeting next week, enjoy!
Yours in Rotary,
Kristie
PS Remember to reply to this message for a make-up, and include Denise at lovelylawn@live.com.
Greetings and my apologies for this coming to you so late. I must have been enjoying the beautiful weather in south Texas and the Ry-Cap just slipped my mind...
At our business meeting, we discussed the need for a new secretary. I have been given all of Rhonda's files and am working on sorting through...the good news is that it's not as much stuff as I originally thought, the bad news is, Rhonda's not here to explain some of it. However...drum roll please...Denise has agreed to become our new secretary! Yippee! Thank you, Denise. She and I will go over all the files and, together, we will get through it all.

We have met the budget of $300 for the Ecuador project and have spent $200 or the other community donations budget for the Halloween Carnival at $100 and a donation to the Conflict Center of $100 for the District Governor’s charity.
I am working to get the attendance reports caught up for Denise. Please remember to reply to this email if you would like a make up for the meeting. Probably a good idea to include Denise in that reply as well.
Please remember the November 20 bowling fundraiser in Grand Lake. I know of one team that is taking the challenge, but it would be nice to have at least one more. I believe some of the Interact Club will be there as well.
See you all tomorrow!
Kristie
Greetings! I just called out to Grand Elk and they are closed for the winter. So, let's meet tomorrow night for Happy Hour at Maverick's. We will get things started around 5:00 in the lounge/bar area and I am sure Sean will have a fire going for those of us who want to spill over into the dinner crowd. Okay, now that the important stuff is taken care of...
Jeff gave us an update on Kimberlee. They were waiting to do surgery to implant a permanent shunt until her blood chemistry was more stable. She had received plasma and Vitamin K and during the meeting Jeff received a text that they were heading into surgery. Please continue to keep Kimberlee and her family in your thoughts and prayers.
Becasue Kimberlee will require on-going care, Rhonda has stepped down from her position as secretary and from all committees. We plan to discuss this at our 11/7 board meeting, but if any of you are interested in taking on the position of secretary, please let me know ASAP. It will be hard to fill Rhonda's shoes, but together we can figure it all out!
Tim Nicklaus from the Grand County Historical Association was our speaker. He presented us with some great old footage of the early skiing in Grand County, pre-Winter Park Days, and of Hot Sulphur Springs. Tim also provided information on the Grand Winter Sports Carnival and upcoming events to celebrate 100 years of snow sports in the county. If you need more information check out www.GrandWinterCarnival.com or call 970-725-3939.
Rod's ticket was drawn for a whopping $16 Basket Bucks, unfortunately he did not win. Don't forget Pakistani Bowling on 11/20--who is interested? We have a challenge from Grand Lake that I hope we can win! Surely, we can take them, right?
Remember Happy Hour, tomorrow, 11/4 at MAVERICKS! Hope to see you there.
Kristie
Hello, Rotarians! At our meeting this week, Jeff gave us an update on Kimberlee Nanda. He reports that an MRI revealed the surgeon had removed all of the tumor and she did not have to undergo another surgery this week. They believe she may have suffered a stroke at some point, as some functions, like gag reflex are impaired. She will remain in ICU for a while and in the hospital for another 10-14 days before moving on to a rehabilitation center. She needs to build her strength in order to start chemo and radiation therapies. She is not in a room that allows flowers just yet, but if you would like to send a card or note, the address is:
Kimberlee Nanda
c/o Exempla Good Samaritan
200 Exempla Circle
Lafayette, CO 80026-3370
Pam Gilbert, from Centro Educativo La Minga was our guest speaker. She updated us on the many happenings at her school in Equador. Pam has worked with many Rotary Clubs, including ours, to raise funds to help this wonderful community. Pam reports that “Minga” is the native word for “barn raising” and through all of their projects, they have not had to pay for any labor as the people do all the work in the spirit of “Minga”. If you would like to donate, are interested in volunteering or have questions or suggestions, you may reach Pam at gilbertp0012@gmail.com or through the website at www.escuelaminga.org .
Jack was once again the lucky ticket holder for $10.50 Basket Bucks. However, he did not continue his winning streak.
Remember, tonight is the Halloween Carnival at Granby Elementary School. Don’t forget to show up if you have volunteered to help!
Next Friday, 11/4, is our next Happy Hour. It was suggested we try Grand Elk. I will contact them to make sure they are open and prepare them for the wildness that is our group/happy hour! Look for more details next week.
Thank you,
Kristie
Hello! I will do just a quick recap of the meeting, and will cut and paste information from Tom’s presentation on the Grand County Concert Series.
We received updates from Jeff on Kimberlee Nanda’s status. As Jeff has reported, the tumor is malignant and will require further surgery early next week followed by chemo and radiation therapies. Please keep Kimberlee, and all her family, in your prayers. Thank you, Jeff, for the updates.
Phil reminded us of the $100 challenge from the Rotary Club of Grand Lake on their Pakistani Bowling Tournament November 20. Would anyone be interested in coordinating a team or two from our club? I could really use some help in organizing and am confident we can be triumphant on this bet! Speaking of triumph, Jack was the lucky winner of $160 Basket Bucks! Congratulations, Jack, and thank you for your donation back to the Rotary Foundation. Jeff reminded us that this is likely the last weekend to get in your road clean up, so don’t forget and be safe out there!

That is all for now!

Greetings! Before I jump into the Ry-Cap, I want to bring you all up to speed on Rhonda’s daughter Kimberlee. Last week she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She had been experiencing headaches and dizziness which prompted the MRI. Her doctors have kept her at low altitude because of the risks of pressure on the brain and as of Wednesday afternoon, had admitted her to the hospital to better monitor. Kimberlee is scheduled for surgery tomorrow. Jeff, who is reporting on behalf of the family, says that the success rate for this type of tumor is very good. I do not have the specifics for which hospital, perhaps Jeff can update us all on that? Please keep Kimberlee, Rhonda, Casey and their family in your thoughts and prayers and remember to send good energy and positive thoughts toward Boulder tomorrow. I will keep you posted if I hear anything else.
Our meeting on 10/5 was a business meeting. Rhonda reported we are at 70% attendance. Our account balances are as follows: Club = $4637.77; Foundation = $1960.41; our two CD’s = $5599.24 and $5470.82.
For our 10/12 meeting, Elena had the program. She discussed our economy and free trade system and covered a wide variety of topics including our monetary policies, questioning whether ours is truly a free trade system and discussing how the issue is non-partisan in nature and no one political party is to blame. If you would like more information on this topic, please contact Elena as she did have a sign-up sheet if you are interested in links and discussions on this topic.
Bill had the lucky ticket but not the lucky card for $152 Basket Bucks. Tom Chaffin has this weeks’ program and will be talking about the Grand County Concert Series. A big thank you to Jack, Hope, Bob, Ann, Rod, Jeff, Deb, Frank, his brother Terry, and Mark and Jeanine Johnson (WP/FV Rotary) for joining me at our 10/7 Happy Hour at Brickhouse. It was a really nice crowd and most everyone stayed for dinner and more fellowship! Does anyone have a location in mind for 11/4? Please let me know. Please reply to this rather lengthy email if you would like a make-up for 10/5, 10/12 or both!
See you ‘round,
Kristie
Greetings! I hope this finds you all enjoying a spectacular autumn day in Grand County--you sure can't beat the colors right now!
Wayne Balnicki presented this week's program on Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS), specifically the quagga and zebra mussels. Wayne works seasonally for the Division of Wildlife doing boat inspections at the three lakes. Since 2008 when Lake Granby was found to be contaminated, the DOW has worked hard to educate the boating public about these invasive species. Wayne explained that the mussels can produce a million eggs in just two weeks, which is why control is such a big issue. Through inspecting, and, if needed, decontaminating boats, it appears the efforts are working. He reported that 99% of boaters are well educated and comply with inspections and he has only had to get the authorities (Grand County Sheriff and State Patrol) involved two times. Thank you, Wayne, for a very interesting program!
The Oktoberfest Pancake Breakfast was discussed briefly with the consensus being that this is not a good fundraiser for us. We will discuss this at our board meeting (all are invited) at noon on Monday, October 3 at Edward Jones.
Up for grabs was $129 in Basket Bucks, Laurie Tanquary's ticket was drawn, but the ten of diamonds means the pot continues to grow!!!
Don't forget our next Happy Hour is Friday, October 7 at Brickhouse 40.
Our meeting next week is a business meeting, with a majority of the time dedicated to getting us all in compliance with RI Abuse and Harassment Policy. I hope all can be in attendance to take care of this little bit of "house keeping".
Please let me know if you have any items for the board meeting.
See you 'round,
Kristie
Yikes! I am so very late in getting this out to you all. Therefore, some of my report will be in hindsight...
Alan Sommerfield was our guest speaker. Alan was at NORAD on 9/11 and gave us a very interesting run down of the skies that day as well as his vantage point from that command center. He also reported on changes that have taken effect since 9/11. It was a very interesting talk.
Tom rallied a group to staff a pancake breakfast on 9/24 in conjunction with Oktoberfest and the 5K/10K run. Here is Barton's take on the event:
"Thanks to all who volunteered for todays Oktober Fest breakfast. There were almost more of us than there were guests. I think we should really think about picking our fund raisers more carefully as $100 for four hours of work works out to $12.50 each or $3.13 per hour per person. That isn't even close to minimum wage. I for one would gladly pay $13 rather than standing around for four hours and having to get up early. In the past three years I think we have made about $300 total on this event. We really need to pick and choose our events better."
I think the timing of this fundraiser is the problem as well as the fact that the run is not drawing a lot of participants. Our breakfast is held while the town/chamber are setting up for the day's festivities--not a lot going on and not a lot of people milling around. I agree with Barton that we ought to reconsider this fundraiser and focus on events that guarantee more of a draw.
The Basket Bucks remain over $100 as Fred did not draw the joker.
A big thanks to Tom for organizing the breakfast, and for everyone who showed up to help. Remember your highway sections, Jeff would like those done by Columbus Day, 10/10!
Our speaker this week is Wayne Balnicki who will be talking about his adventures with the Colorado Division of Wildlife - boat inspections - acquatic invasive species. I look forward to seeing you all there. If you would like a make-up for the 9/21 meeting, please reply to me and we will get that taken care of.
See you 'round,
Kristie
Good Monday morning to you all! I hope everyone had a great weekend. Our meeting last week was a business meeting, and while the content might have been a bit dry, the meal was certainly not! Sean treated us to some real comfort food--slow roasted beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, veggies, salad and pie. Yum and oh so comforting!
Secretary's Report: We have 28 active members and one honorary member. Our attendance for the last month was at 69%, just shy of Rhonda's goal of 70%. Let's work to get the attendance numbers up! If you are reading this, and need a make-up, just reply back to me that you received and read this email and we will record it as a make-up.
Treasurer's Report: Our club account has $4344.77; Foundation checking has $1960.42; and we have two CD's that recently rolled over in the amounts of $5470.82 and $5599.24. We are on pace with our club fundraising efforts at 48% of budget. That being said, we still have a significant amount to raise within the Foundation budget. Keep up the good work!
As part of our Vocational Service Area, we are teaming up with Interact and the high school counselor's office to offer a monthly vocational conversation. We will provide lunch and a vocational speaker to talk about their profession. Barton will do our first conversation in October. The remaining dates are as follows: 11/17, 12/15, 1/18/12, 2/23, 3/21, 4/26, and 5/23. Please let me know if you are interested in speaking to a small (maximum of 25) group of students and I will get you on the calendar. Also, please let me know if there's anyone outside the club that may be interested in speaking. I am going to solicit donations to help cover the cost of the lunches, and if you are part of a vocational/professional group that could help underwrite or sponsor the event, we welcome your donation!
This Saturday, 9/24, we are hosting a pancake breakfast in Polhamus Park as part of the Chamber's Oktoberfest. The breakfast will run from 10:00-12:00 noon. Tom has agreed to spearhead this event and show Denise the ropes. Please let Tom know if you can help, and spread the word to your spheres of influence!
Our program this week is a friend of Tim's, Alan Sommerfeld. He was a lawyer in the Air Force and was on duty at the battle station for Norad in Colorado Springs during the 9/11/2001 attack. He will give a first hand account of the event from his perspective on active duty. He gave the talk to the Winter Park club and the Grand Lake club. Many of the WP club members said they wished they had invited their spouses as it was an interesting talk. I hope you all can make it!
Don't forget to reply if you need a make-up!
See you 'round,
Kristie
Wow! We had a packed house today! Sean treated us to BBQ ribs, salad, rice, vegetables and peaches with whipped cream (special thanks to Bill for "hand-picking" the peaches).
We inducted three members into the club today. They are Lorrie Tanquary, Denise Clancy and Bob Saint. Laurie and Denise are new to Rotary, Bob is a former member and president of our club. Our Rotary family welcomes these new members.
Kriss Phillips had the program and talked about his Polio Vaccination Trips. He also presented us with some updated statistics. For the week ending 8/20/11, there were only 327 cases globally. Kriss admitted that while he was out in the field, he doubted whether we could really "wrap our arms around" polio and truly stop its spread. He was assured by a doctor on the team that every individual they vaccinated helped to keep the disease from spreading. I think with only 327 cases, we are certainly wrapping our arms around the epidemic, and thanks to wonderful Rotarians like Kriss, we are that much closer to eradication. Kriss had some great adventures along the way and offered, once they get settled into their new home, to share those trips over wine. We might just hold you to that, Kriss, because it sounds like you have some great stories to share!
Jack and I helped out Saturday night with bingo in Grand Lake and Jack brought a check for $345 for our efforts. Let's definitely keep this on our radar for next summer--it's a great way to raise money and it helps out our Rotarian family in Grand Lake. Rhonda drew the ace of diamonds, so the 95 basket bucks live to see another week!
Reminder: Dictionaries are being distributed tomorrow. If you would like to help out, Rhonda will be at Winter Park Christian School at 8:30 (yes, Barton, that's in the a.m.); Granby Elementary at 1:00; Indian Peaks at 2:30 and Kremmling at 3:00. The labels are all in the books (thanks, Rhonda) and they are ready to go.
Our next board meeting is Monday, noon at Edward Jones. All are welcome, so bring a lunch. If you have any items you would like on that agenda, please let me know.
ALERT: We are slated to do a pancake breakfast for Octoberfest on 9/24. Is there any brave soul who would like to head this one up? It's a much smaller scale than Ride the Rockies. Please let me know if you can do this. I am sure Tom and Wayne can help steer you in the right direction!
Thank you to each and every one of you for being such wonderful Rotarians!
See you 'round,
Kristie
Wow! Can you believe it's September already? What happened to summer?
At our meeting on Wednesday, Jeff gave a safety presentation for highway clean-up. Be on the look out for chemicals, needles or other suspicious items. If in doubt, just leave it there and call the authorities to come check it out. Congratulations to those of you who have already completed your highway clean-up. For those of us (myself included) who have not completed it, Jeff's goal is for us to have all sections done by Columbus day.
We made around $400 on the Mountain Man Rendezvous. It was a great event with a lot of potential for growth. If you didn't hear, Barton won the red chili category, and Sean won the green chili category. Laurie Tanquary entered her orange carrot cake (my personal favorite) and took third place in the cakes catgory. Congratulations to all and thank you for your entries. A big thanks to all Rotarians who helped out at the event. If you were at the event and would like credit for your attendance, please let Rhonda know you were there.
The dictionaries are here and we will be delivering them on Thursday, September 8. Frank and I will deliver to Granby Elementary and IPCS at 1:00 and 2:30 respectively. Rhonda will head up deliveries to Winter Park Christian and Kremmling at 8:30 and 3:00 respectively. She could use one or two of you to help out. Frank and I could use another person at least at Granby since there are over 60 kids there. Please let us know if you can help out that day. I may go over after our meeting on Wednesday to start putting the labels on, and welcome anyone that can help there, too.
Don't forget Happy Hour this Friday (tonight for some of you reading this) at Seven Trails Grille. We will start gathering around 5:00, but the official happy hour for the bar runs from 4-6. I will be coming from Denver, so don't wait for me. I hope to be there as close to 5:00 as possible. Party on, Rotarians! I will also extend an invitation to all members of other Grand County Clubs.
Deb Gahan from the TCP (Trinity Church in the Pines) Food Bank and Angels Outreach, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, would like to come speak to our club about her organization. If anyone with an upcoming program would like her to speak, please let me know and I will make arrangements. Please see attached regarding a fundraising event to which all are invited.
Kriss Phillips has the program for next week and will be sharing with us his experiences from a Polio Vaccination Trip. Our next board meeting is 9/12 with the business meeting to follow on 9/14.
Basket Bucks keep growing as Tom drew the queen of hearts this week. It should be over $90 next week!
I look forward to seeing you tomorrow at Happy Hour!
See you 'round,
Kristie
Greetings Rotarians! Let me first apologize for not sending a Rotar-Ry-Cap for last weeks' meeting--apparently I was on a slippery slope because it either slipped my mind or time simply slipped away. Tim gave us a beautiful presentation from his trek to Patagonia and that's about all I can remember. Perhaps I was a little too distracted/excited about getting the kiddos back to school? Again, my apologies.
We had a packed house yesterday and enjoyed buffalo enchiladas, rice, vegetables, salad and, in my opinion, an AMAZING desert of apple egg rolls. Thank you, Sean!
Sean gave a run down of the activities for this weekend and explained how the judging will work. If you have not already signed up and are available to help on either Saturday or Sunday (or both) please contact Sean or show up at Kaibab Park.
Hal Kuzwara, the District Literacy Co-Chair was the program. Hal discussed the definition of literacy, which essentially is any exchange of information, and explained how it is a much broader subject than most think. He encouraged us to look at all that we do and consider if it fits in this very broad definition. I did take notes and will use that information when I apply for the District Literacy Awards next year. To say the least, we ARE doing much more in literacy than just dictionaries and scholarships!
Speaking of dictionaries, they are here and ready for us to give out on World Literacy Day, September 8. We could use some help with this, so if you are available, please let myself or Frank know. It's fun to give out the dictionaries and it counts as a meeting make-up!
Mark your calendars for our next Happy Hour. It is next week, 9/2/11, at Seven Trails starting around 5'ish. Seven Trails is located at the base of Sol Vista ski area.
Barton held the lucky ticket and was just one card away from the $71 Basket Bucks!
Please remember the Rendezvous this weekend and your shift(s)!
Yours in Rotary,
Kristie
Good Afternoon!
At our meeting last week, we enjoyed a visit from District Governor Jim Halderman and his wife Peggy. The Board met early with them to discuss our club's activities, fundraiser, challenges and vitories. DG Halderman updated us with Polio information. Though it is not completely erradicated, we are still making great strides toward the effort. Jim also gave a motivational speech about being a Rotarian and the family of Rotary. Our Assistant District Governor, Mark Lund, reported that the Halderman's were generally impressed with all of the clubs in the county, especially the county-wide participation in the dictionary program and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
I placed the order for the dictionaries today. As per our previous discussions, we are going to distribute on 9/8, World Literacy Day to Granby Elementary School. I have a message into WP/FV and Kremmling to see if they want to do the same or wait until later in the year.
On another note, please remember the chili and confection cook-offs on 8/27 and 8/28. We need all hands on deck to help out with this event. If you haven't already signed up, please do so with Sean.
I look forward to seeing you all at this week's meeting. Tim will be taking us on a trekking adventure to Patagonia--should be fun!
Yours in Rotary,
Kristie
Greetings,
Our meeting Wednesday was highlighted by a delicious lunch of chicken stuffed with bacon, ricotta and mushrooms, salad, veggies and peach cobbler. YUM!
Phil Pankey and Al Olson (Grand Lake Club) did the program and presented more information on the re-districting issue for Grand County. They discussed some of the different mapping options and explained how the current suggestion is to group us with Boulder County (The City of Boulder being its own district). Phil explained and provided documentation on how this proposed reapportionment would actually be unconstitutional, and could provide us with the foundation for a lawsuit should it go to the Supreme Court as the map stands now. If you would like to voice your opinion, send emails to reapp2011@state.co.gov. If you would like more information on meetings that will be held close by, please contact Phil as he has the schedule.
Sean and Bill reported on Waiter Wars. Collectively they raised over $500! Great job guys! Sean reported that he had about a 27% tip rate, but Bill's was somewhere between 80-90%.
If you have not already signed up to help with the chili cookoff weekend, please check with Sean. We need lots of help and still have several vacancies in the schedule to cover. The event is getting some great exposure, as is our club and the fact that we are raising money for our scholarship fund. Bill had his shot at $39 Basket Bucks, but came up with the five of hearts.
Our District Governor, Jim Halderman, will be visiting and presenting next week's program. Please try to make it to this one. Jim is a dynamic speaker and I believe you will find him very interesting. Don't forget, Happy Hour is tomorrow night starting out at the Granby Farmer's Market around 5:00! The Chamber will be serving wine, beer and margaritas and there will be live music. Come thirsty and bring your dancing shoes! Hope to see you there!
That's it for now.
Your Friend in Rotary,
Kristie
Kristie was on vacation so Barton hosted the meeting.
Bill Edelstein reminded members that he and Sean Richardson were having a contest on Saturday night July 30 to see which was the BEST WAITER. Which could get the most tips, with all tips going to Rotary. Don't miss this it should be fun.
Laurie Findley was the speaker and she discussed the Grand Rendezvous 'Luber Jack and Mountain Man' show August 27 and 28. Granby Rotary will sponsor the 'Chili Cook Off' on Saturday August 27 and the 'Pie Contest and Auction' on Sunday August 28 at Kaibab Park. She passed out information about each day's events. The Chili Cook Off and Pie Auction should be a great fund raisers for our scholarship program. Additional information will be posted on our website and is also available at the Granby Events website.
Rhonda's number was drawn from the basket bucks but she drew the ace of diamonds not the joker.
Next weeks program will by by Phil Pankey about the redistricting proposal.
Greetings!
We had good attendance at our meeting this week. Our Assistant District Governor, Mark Lund, presented our club with the Presidential Citation award for our hard work and efforts last year. He also discussed the WP/FV Golf Tournament and explained that the proceeds from that event are dedicated to purchasing the dictionaries. Mark also presented certificate of thanks from Habitat for Humanity of Grand County.
Barton's speaker was June Matson from the Pregnancy Resource Connection. June explained the funding sources, structure and services that PRC offers. She also explained their intake process and the options available to a pregnant woman. June welcomes all to stop in and see their facility. Jeff has redone the Highway Cleanup assignments and will be presenting some safety information at our 8/31 meeting. Make sure you take a look to see who you are working with and let Jeff know when you get your section of highway cleaned. Phil Pankey discussed the importance of the re-districting and encouraged all to sign, and get others to sign, the petition.
Tim won the opportunity to draw for $23 in basket bucks, but did not end up winning the pot. Barton will be in charge of next week's meeting as the DeLays are heading out for the "Epic Roadtrip to Minnesota" on Monday...wish us luck and cooler weather! Laurie will be presenting on Sean's behalf, information regarding the Chili Cook-off/Supper fundraising opportunity for our club.
I would like to have our next Happy Hour on Friday, August 5. This coincides with the Chamber's First Friday at the Farmers Market where they will be selling beer, wine and margaritas. We can start out at the Farmers Market and finish at Brickhouse 40 for those who are interested. If the last one was any indication, a good time should be had by all! Thanks to those of you who attended; Fred tells us his wife may join the club...woo hoo!
I hope you all have a great weekend!
Yours in Rotary,
Kristie
Greetings Rotarians! Here is a quick update/recap of yesterday's meeting. Eden Recor was our guest speaker and he talked about the Rotary International Foundation. He explained where our contributions go and how they come back into the District. As a club, we are donating approximately $125 per member, but please note that not all members are donating the annual $100 for Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY). The extra money that some of our member donates keeps our per capita up, but technically speaking we are not participating in EREY. Please take a look at your individual budgets and see if you can find some extra to donate. Eden wants me to "strong arm" those of you who aren't giving, so consider this my strong arm. Enough said!
We also heard from Larry Norman who is seeking support for a youth revival, but I have not received any more specifics from him to pass along to you. His event is 7/17/11. If I hear anything from him I will forward it along but at this point, any contributions/support would be on an individual level.
Jim Williams' funeral services are at 1:00 Saturday, July 9 at Church of the Eternal Hills. I know many of us are planning to attend. We had some discussion about how to honor Jim and his contributions to Rotary. In a discussion with Rhonda, his wife, Helen, seemed to like the idea of a bench. If you have any thoughts about this, or would like to spearhead this effort, please let me know.
There was discussion of having a monthly Granby Rotary Happy Hour, the motion was brought to the floor and seconded and UNANIMOUSLY passed. Therefore, be it known that the first official Granby Rotary Happy Hour of the 2011-12 fiscal year shall be next Friday, July 15 at Maverick's starting at the 5:00'ish hour. Hopefully this is enough notice to fit it on your calendars. We can discuss future dates and venues at the meeting over adult beverages. I personally will be buying the first round to celebrate Wayne, Tom and all of our successes thus far! So, be there, or be somewhere else! (The Rotary Club of Granby requests that you drink responsibly, if you need a designated driver, then, by all means, bring one along!)
Lastly, our monthly board meeting will be Monday at 12:00 noon at Edward Jones. This is a brown bag lunch meeting and all are welcome to attend. Please let me know if you plan to attend or if you have something you would like included on the agenda.
That is all for now...happy trails!
~Kristie
